In their first-ever game in the Women’s Euro Beach Soccer League, Portugal led previous continental champions England for much of the game, only to fall to late goals.

POR 2-3 ENG (Group 1)

Having won the EBSL Regular Stage in Nazaré, beating Spain in the final, England may have gone into today’s game against a team who were essentially newcomers to women’s beach soccer with confidence.

However the Portuguese hosts, with the beach soccer legend Alan Cavalcanti at the wheel, took the lead in the very last second of the opening period, when J. Meira’s long-range shot wrong-footed the keeper.

Clark equalised in the second, but Carolina snatched the lead back for Portugal. Steven Black’s Lionesses looked nervy but late goals for Martin and Clark turned the match around in the dying minutes, and England breathed a sigh of relief.

Goals: 1-0: J. Meira, min. 0 (1); 1-1: Clark, min. 3 (2); 2-1: Carolina, min. 11 (3); 2-2: Martin, min. 4 (3); 2-3: Clark, min. 3 (3);
